In honour of the great Bertie Reed

The late, brave Bertie Reed was the very first South African to single-handedly sail around the world. He was one of South Africa's favourite sailors, as he inspired the minds and hearts of many a yacht-enthusiast.

Wilde Pressed and Squeezed Fruit Juice was one of the proud sponsors of the Bertie Reed tribute event, held at the V&A Waterfront on the 22nd of November 2009. Here, a brass bust of Bertie Reed by (renowned Cape Town sculptor Charl Frank) was unveiled on the Clock Tower Square.

The SA Navy band provided a musical interlude, before speakers took the stage to pay their respects to the inspiring sailor, Bertie Reed. The sculpture was officiated by British solo sailor, Sir Robin Knox-Johnson and Mrs Pat Reed. Approximately 800 guests gathered to witness the theatrical sequence of an Ocean Race Start and the mooring of the famous Voortrekker Yacht, crewed by SA Navy Sailors who sailed with Bertie.

To conclude the ceremony, the ten competing yachts in the Clipper - Around the World Yacht Race, accompanied by local yachts from RCYC and the NSRI, performed a sail-past in honour of Bertie Reed.
