In honour of the great Bertie Reed

The late, brave Bertie Reed was the very first South African to single-handedly sail around the world. He was one of South Africa's favourite sailors, as he inspired the minds and hearts of many a yacht-enthusiast.

Wilde Pressed and Squeezed Fruit Juice was one of the proud sponsors of the Bertie Reed tribute event, held at the V&A Waterfront on the 22nd of November 2009. Here, a brass bust of Bertie Reed by (renowned Cape Town sculptor Charl Frank) was unveiled on the Clock Tower Square.

The SA Navy band provided a musical interlude, before speakers took the stage to pay their respects to the inspiring sailor, Bertie Reed. The sculpture was officiated by British solo sailor, Sir Robin Knox-Johnson and Mrs Pat Reed. Approximately 800 guests gathered to witness the theatrical sequence of an Ocean Race Start and the mooring of the famous Voortrekker Yacht, crewed by SA Navy Sailors who sailed with Bertie.

To conclude the ceremony, the ten competing yachts in the Clipper - Around the World Yacht Race, accompanied by local yachts from RCYC and the NSRI, performed a sail-past in honour of Bertie Reed.

Off-road madness all the way!

Wilde Pressed and Squeezed Fruit Juice sponsored a team of RC buggy drivers that took part in the finals of the 2009 National Tournament. The team, consisting of Keith Busby, Andy Podrenek and Christiaan de Wet, did exceptionally well.

The team took part in the A-Mains race on the 15th of November, as they were all qualified under the top ten racers of the event. It was a grueling one hour race that challenged each driver's racing skill, concentration and car reliability. Christiaan finished 4th, Andy 8th and Keith 9th. With these outstanding results, the team automatically qualified to represent South Africa at the 2010 World Championship in Pataya next year.

Learning to bike, the right way

Erica Green is a two-time Olympic cyclist who is involved with the registration services for several Stillwater Sports and Entertainment events, including XTERRA, Pronutro AfricanX and the Wines2Whales on a part time basis. She also runs Daisyway Coaching Systems.

Team Wilde braves Double Century Cycle Race

Team Wilde took part in one of the most challenging races the Western Cape has to offer. Team Wilde consisted of Marius van Tonder, Kabous Marra, Johan Murray-Muller, Gerhard Slabber, Ferdie Dick, Wynand Lourens, Suretha Kotze, Henk Jordaan, Niel de Villiers, Dirkie Brits as well as two Springbok Cyclists, Dawie du Toit and Rèniell Matthysen.

Team Wilde looked set to go, although minor equipment upgrades were necessary for some individuals, who sported state of the art models from the 1950s. Sure, they don't make bikes the way they used to, but back then they didn't use bikes for the Double Century Cycle Race!

Team Wilde made their way to Swellendam on the 20th of November 2009, where they camped out before the race the next morning. The race was set to officially start at 06h27 and Team Wilde arrived, demanding heads to be turned with their branded attire.

The Double Century route was introduced by a merciless 60 km climb, forcing each team member to never forget the words 'OP DE TRADOUWPAS'. Luckily, the way to the Montague stop allowed the riders to catch their breaths. Some of Team Wilde's members were forced to forfeit the race along the way, as the strain took its toll.

The first six members from Team Wilde clocked in at 8 hours and 24 minutes, while the remaining three members finished the race in 9 hours and 56 minutes. Team Wilde finished 115th out of the 196 teams that competed in the Double Century Race 2009.

Madison Track Cycling 2009

The Wilde Cycling Team did exceptionally well in the Madison Track Cycling Race. The Madison race is a cycling relay where teams try to overlap their rivals. It was created in New York's infamous Madison Square Gardens, hence the name of the race. It is hard to keep track of the race, but it's very exciting if you can follow.

How it works is: at any one time only one member of the team is involved in the competition. The one team member rests while his team mate races. The resting member rides high on the track whilst the racing happens at the bottom. The rest period usually takes one and a half laps. The resting rider is thrown into the competition when his team mate slings him in with either a hand sling, or else by a firm push on the seat. The basic objective is to complete more laps than the rival teams. Points are scored by contesting sprints at specified marks during the race. If two or more teams finish the race on the same lap, then the team with the greater point total wins.

Team Wilde are the Champions in the WP Madison Track Cycling Race 2009 and Bronze Medalists at the SA Championships 2009.

Congratulations to the Wilde Cycling Team with their outstanding results!

2x4x4 equals an action packed weekend

Wilde Pressed and Squeezed Fruit Juice, together with Citrusdal Tourism, hosted the 2009 edition of the Citrusdal 2x4x4 outdoor weekend from 3 to 4 October 2009.

Approximately 45 off-road vehicles and over 100 quad bikes attended the fun filled weekend in Citrusdal's juicy valleys. There were various routes to choose from - each with its own intensity level. The weekend catered for all outdoor lovers alike - from the extreme people who want to test themselves and their vehicles, to the more laid back "Sunday drivers" who just wanted to drive for the love of scenic landscapes and the great outdoors.

The teams headed out to the tracks early the Saturday morning and started finishing their races later that afternoon. Each entrant received a goodie bag filled with lots of surprises, even Wilde Pressed and Squeezed Fruit Juice.

The rest of the family that didn't participate in the races, weren't left out in the cold. There was a food and wine tasting area, as well as a kids' play area, to keep the whole family entertained.

In the spotlight: Berry!

Fruit adds an important part of a healthy diet, but a portion of fruit can be substituted by a far more convenient glass of 100% fruit juice - to be used in moderate amounts. Wilde Fruit Juice is pressed and squeezed from pure fruit, thus being your best alternative choice when actual fruit is hard to come by.

Berries taste good - wether you eat it raw, use it in recipes, spread it evenly as jam over some toast, or have a delectable berry flavoured liqueur after dinner - you will surely agree that whatever form berry products take, they taste good.

Berries offer more than just good taste, as they are known to be full of vitamins, nutrients and powerful antioxidants. Wilde Pressed and Squeezed Fruit Juice realised the great benefits of berries and decided to put it to good use. Wilde used a combination of grape juice, youngberry juice and black current juice in their convenient 'Wild Berry' 100% fruit juice blend, with no artificial additives or treatments that'll make the berries lose their power-packing punch! Wilde's Wild Berry is a naturally good-for-you type of fruit juice.

A whole different kind of ball game

Wilde Pure Pressed and Squeezed Fruit Juice put on their bowling shoes and joined Club Newlands at the smooth surfaced lanes of Let's Go Bowling on the 26th of August 2009. This was an opportunity for Club Newlands Members to meet their Vodacom WP Rugby heroes in an informal environment. The players (always competing!) soon strutted their ten pin bowling knack among one another, which soon rubbed off on the kids. This yielded a fun filled competitive atmosphere, enjoyed by all the bowlers (big and small) present.
