Wilde False Bay (don't be fooled by the) Challenge

The waters that lie between Gordon's Bay and Simon's Town, is unpredictable and demands respect. Valorous men have braved these waters before, but not all of them have succeeded in the Wilde False Bay Challenge. Sure, it doesn't seem far from one harbour to the next, but when you're on open water, a distant shore is a world away.

The Wilde Team from the Gordon's Bay Yacht Club, Ettienne Laubscher and Pieter Hamersma, attempted the Wilde False Bay Challenge on 24 January 2009. The race proved a challenge, to even an experienced crew like this. After a few calculations, the decision was made to call it a day. Flat waters and unfortunate weather conditions left the crew no choice, but to return to Gordon's Bay.

On the way back, the Wilde Team encountered a whale, parked about 200 meters from Seal Island. Etienne said, "I wish all of you could've seen it. It looked like a massive, sleek dolphin."

We couldn't get a shot of the whale, but here are some photo's of the

crew,

their yacht,

and Pat Reed (as well as the yacht's cuddly companion, Bertie Bear - wearing his Wilde cap!)
